1.7 GB seems surprisingly high to me. I recompiled a full Ubuntu kernel
package with a patch applied. I don't think it used nearly 1.7GB, but I
might not have been paying attention.
I do remember building 1.2 kernels on my 386-40 (go AMD! :p) with 4 MB
of RAM. Compiling a kernel was something I had to start before bed time
:p. Upgrading the memory to 8 MB stopped most of the swapping and
brought the compile times down considerably :p.
