I cheat (well, actually, I no longer string ethernet for living, but I keep in
practice by wiring up my house).  I use surface mount jacks and buy pre-made
patch cables to go from the jack to the computer.  The jacks are much easier
to wire and if you get it wrong, you can pull the wires out and try again,
rather than throw away the ruined plug and trying not to wreck the next one.
And in the house, I used a patch panel at the router end, with similarly
easy-to-use jacks on the patch panel.
