[ale] Laptop too slow

The battery is useless. It only stays up a few seconds.
/proc/cpuinfo shows AMD K6 473.459 mhz and 64K of cache.
It could be running degraded I just don't know how to tell. I am not
used to laptops and their power management circuitry. I did try to
put it to sleep with the ALT- F key combo that Compaq designated to
put it to sleep with but nothing happened. There is an icn in the
tray that shows AC power but it won't stay up long enough to switch
to the battery icon if I unplug it.
