Andrew,
Thanks for your response. I get persistent messages from most of the 
sound devices that I fire up like this :

    "Direct access to sound device not possible,
    No soundcard available or sound support not configured yet, etc..."

So, how would "alsactl store" help me if I am not even able to configure 
the card? I will try it anyway, because logic and consistency  are often 
in short supply in this line of work. The SuSE folks want me to jump 
through a bunch of hoops before they even will consider my problem.
I have a cheapo soundcard lying around that I would like to try some day,
just to see whether SuSE9.2 does any sound at all.
Meanwhile, thanks for your interest. If I can ever get the bugger going,
