[ale] bootsplash configuration and .spl files?

I vaguely recall that the splash image is contained in /boot/message, 
which is actually a cpio file.  Unpack it and see if this is what you're 
looking for.  I would suspect that you could simply replace the splash 
image there with what you want, but I've not tried this.
