Sounds like you just need to tinker with X's settings, and turn off
the framebuffer.  I use pure text mode and whatever mode works for
my monitor.  The automagic configuration utilities probably don't
support that under SuSE.

I don't use framebuffers, myself, and if the accelerated drivers for
your graphics card do not work, you can try the generic VESA driver
for X (with a bit of a reduction in graphics speed).
