OK. I reread the post and realized you are running Firefox on an FC3
setup. Change the permissions of the preferences.js file to be root
owned and student readable. They can now make _NO_ changes in the
setup. :)

In fact, you can chown root all of the . files followed by chmod 755 *.*
and all of the setup is locked against changes.
