How embarrassing...  On my low end laptop, I'm getting:

2912 frames in 5.0 seconds = 582.400 FPS
2912 frames in 5.0 seconds = 582.400 FPS
2913 frames in 5.0 seconds = 582.600 FPS
2912 frames in 5.0 seconds = 582.400 FPS

On my Sony, for some reason direct rendering is not enabled.  Anyway, 
the values are worse then on the hp.

1080 frames in 5.0 seconds = 216.000 FPS
1217 frames in 5.0 seconds = 243.400 FPS
1080 frames in 5.0 seconds = 216.000 FPS
1080 frames in 5.0 seconds = 216.000 FPS
1200 frames in 5.0 seconds = 240.000 FPS
