googling for "backing a linux system up to a cd" (which is where this
discussion lead me mentally) brought me to this, which seems pretty cool:

I'm planning on fiddling with this this weekend. If it works like I hope
it will, I'd be able to use it to backup a whole system to cd for a base
backup, send the cd's offsite somewhere, and then use incrementals and
send those images to ye' old webhost (well, at least the last 2 should
fit if I do them weekly, after a few, I'll burn them to cd's too).
This would work for the machine at home that I care about backing up,
the one where all the data is stored. The others I'd have to rebuild
from scratch (but that's not such a big deal, if I lose a disk in one of
those I'll survive, if the house burns down, well, I won't have anything
to rebuild :) )
