[ale] 2.6.8.1 Kernel Panic

do you need initrd to load a module that the kernel needs to mount a 
reiserfs or ext3 filesystem?  Or maybe a SCSI driver?  initrd helps with 
modules that can't be put statically in the kernel or to help reduce 
kernel bloat but still allow a boot to happen.
