This sounds more like a cracked box than a RAID problem. Check the
syslogs for notices from the md subsystem. If you see things that
indicate a drive is dying, then it's a RAID problem. If you see a gap in
the logs (or no logs) then you have a bigger, much worse problem.
Boot it with a Knoppix CD
