Shortly, this weekend, I will be putting in place a Debian box to act as
a firewall/router for my home connection. I want to eventually write my
own QoS rules, possibly using cbq.init
(http://freshmeat.net/projects/cbq.init) to make things a bit easier.
The problem is that I want to first get an idea of the traffic various
protocols are using on the network so that I can write better rules for
the router. My question is this, does anyone know of any type of
software that can run on the router to monitor this stuff and generate
reports?

I know of MRTG but it seems to me that it is relly only useful for
monitoring the total traffic on each network device.

I used to be interested in Windows NT, but the more I see of it the more it looks like traditional Windows with a stabler kernel. I don't find anything technically interesting there. In my opinion MS is a lot better at making money than it is at making good operating systems. -- Linus Torvalds
