Hmm, Im guessing that the modules actually are loaded (check lsmod) incase you 
didn't know. ;)

also, does /etc/modules.conf mention anything about the soundcard?

P.S. James: He said he had been using ALSA with 2.4, so I see no reason that 
the card would crackle more under 2.6. ;)
