You want to pipe the text through 'fmt -72', so some variant of '}!fmt
-72' should do it to the current paragraph.
(Of course I'd just make sure auto-fill-mode was on and then hit M-q
if I needed to force a refill; then again I'm not a vi using heathen
:).
