Burn Knoppix to a CD and boot your laptop with that.  It is 
very GUI oriented and will give you the immediate impression 
that SUSE 8.x or 9.x does with a default install.  However, 
it will quickly give you some knowledge about what hardware 
on your laptop you might have trouble with.  I just 
installed SuSE 9.0 on my wife's PC and a laptop last night 
with no trouble at all.  Just have to configure the logins 
as the patching and base setup is done.  SuSE has the 
fastest install, unless your picking a bunch of software to 
add to the default, of any mainline distro I know.
