[ale] keyboard loses repeat

Here's a weird one.  I've just noticed that my keyboard has lost it's 
ability to repeat keys when a key is held down.  In other words to type 
a string of the same character, I've got to depress the key multiple 
times, holding the key down produces one character.

I had this problem once before, but can't recall what, if anything I did 
to resolve it.

Has anyone else seen this before?

I have been able to turn it back on with 'xset r', but the question 
remains, how did it get 'unset?'
