As I see it there are two main alternatives if your daring:  

http://www.xouvert.org/ 
which aims to merge any changes back into xfree86.

or 

http://www.freedesktop.org/ 
I believe is hosting a project with the aim of separating video drivers
from the X client/server among other goals...
