[ale] X font problems

I have a Debian install to which I'm trying to add some truetype fonts. I
appear to have it so that my TT font server recognizes them (according to
fslsfronts). And that fontserver is in the font path (according to xset),
but gimp and xlsfonts do not show them.
Ideas? Thanks
