[ale] mounting backups

hey im fooling around with making file management a little easier for
myself :) heres what i was thinking, i want to compress the data into
growing archives and mount them, or something like that. i have photo
archives (yes pron and family albums) and currently i manually make
uncompressed iso files but thats quickly taking precious space, i did a
quick search on google, maybe i didnt search with the right words but i
came up with junk installing stuff mostly. so can you mount tar.gz files?
or only uncompress them then view? thanks for your help other suggestions
