A lot of HP devices are supported by the HP Linux project on
sourceforge. I didn't know if the currently available
hardware was supported or if the project was running behind.
I found out today after going to HP's site and then
hopping into the Sourceforge and SuSE pages that a PSC 2175
is fully supported by the HP drivers and SuSE's 9.0
implementation of CUPS and SANE. So, I can go pick one of
those up and get a pretty decent seamless experience for the
user I am setting up. I really want this user's experience
to work out since I don't want to deal with Win98 and the
current crop of viruses. Plus, this is one of those users
who can screw up any computer no matter how much you've
tried to make things simple!
Another option is an Epson or HP scanner that is supported
and a separate printer, probably HP or Lexmark. However,
single device that will allow USB-mass storage mounting of a
camera's memory stick, scanning, and decent printing is
pretty cool when you have one USB port and don't want a hub!
