You're going to get fifteen bazillion answers again.  The more
pragmatic perl people admit TMTOWTDI, and some of those ways may not
involve perl (just so long as it doesn't require inane whitespace :).


The best bet will be to pick a more dynamic language (Perl, Ruby,
Python) to learn first, then look at learning C or C++ afterwards.  If
you're interested in learning for a particular problem domain, find a
coworker or acquaintence of a coworker that deals with that domain and
ask what language they use (and if they'd recommend it :).  For
instance there's a good bit of prior work for genome sequencing et al
done in perl (bioperl.org), so if you were doing that type work you'd
probably want to consider perl rather than ruby or what not.
