It greatly depends on the system you are connecting through.
For Bellsouth DSL (PPPoE) it was something around 1500. But packet sizes
need to be smaller for slower transfer mediums like dial-up. If 1024
works well, bump it up a bit and re-test. If the through-put rate goes
up, bump it up again. If it goes down, back it down.
