[ale] "out of memory" error and dying processes

That seems to be the problem.  I don't think I'm nearby when it
happens.  At least I've never *seen* it happen before.  But I can
track down the time it all started to about a month ago.  Hmmm.  I'm
thinking a leak in one of the dropline gnome-compiled libraries or
something....
