THIS MONTH:

Topic: Using open source software to support Child Survival programs in SE
Asia and to develop International Public Health Networks

Speaker: Dr. Michael Linnan, Paula Eichler

Presentation:

Dr Linnan will give a brief presentation on the picture of child sickness
and deaths in developing countries so that participants will have the
necessary background to discuss the various issues presented during the
second part of the presentation. In this, Mike and Paula will describe the
use of open source software to develop public health networks in Vietnam,
and the upcoming project to develop an open source IT structure for a new
international child health NGO (non-governmental organization) based in
Bangkok and working in Vietnam, China, Indonesia, Bangladesh, Cambodia,
Philippines and Thailand. The NGO aims to use open source software for
project implementation, operational management and international
connectivity. The NGO is called TASC (The Alliance for Safe Children) and
is a partner with UNICEF on the activities.

Paula and Mike are hoping for ideas, inputs and collaborations with local
Linux talent in this effort.

Bios:

Dr. Linnan began his professional career with a BSEE almost thirty years ago
and then added a medical degree and specializations in internal medicine,
public health and epidemiology. He has been with the CDC for almost 20
years, working primarily in international health for most of that time. He
has worked inside Ministries of Health in Uganda, Egypt, Bangladesh,
Indonesia, Philippines, China, Thailand and Vietnam. Most recently he was
the CDC assignee to the Ministry of Health in Vietnam where he developed the
Hanoi School of Public Health and worked with Paula Eichler to develop the
Vietnam Public Health Research Network.

Paula began her CDC IT career in 1993, working with the International Health
Programs Office and has provided IT support to most of the CDC's
international projects. She currently works with IT security in the
bioterror operations area.
