Senior System Administrator
Required Skills
Strong interpersonal and communications skills; capable of writing
proposals or papers, making presentations to internal audiences,
and
working closely with upper management

Ability to solve problems quickly and automate processes
A solid understanding of Solaris and Red Hat Linux operating
systems;
understands paging and swapping, inter-process communications,
devices and what device drivers do, filesystem concepts (inode,
clustering, logical partitions), can use performance analysis to
tune
systems.
A solid understanding of networking/distributed computing
environment concepts; understands principles of routing,
client/server
environments, the design of consistent network-wide filesystem
layouts.
Ability to write scripts in some administrative language (Perl,
Python,
ksh, bash, sh)
Strong hardware and software vendor relation skills
Participate in and lead projects surrounding network/system/site
changes/updates/enhancements
Ability to learn and apply new technology and methodologies in a
distributed environment; recommend hardware and software
solutions
Adaptable to change.
Required Background
Five+ years of system administration experience.
Willingness to mentor more junior administrators
Experience with both Solaris Sparc/x86 (2.6, 7, 8, 9) and
RedHat.Linux
Experience with TCP/IP network protocols, ability to debug network
related issues.
Experience with cabling, computer hardware (Sparc/Intel), SCSI and
peripheral device setup and installations
Desirable Background and Skills
A degree in computer science or a related field
Experience with network and host-based security (snoop, tcpdump,
IDS, netfilter/packet filters, firewalls)
Experience configuring Internet services ? Apache/Tomcat, DNS,
SMTP,
SSH, SSL
Experience developing and implementing a site disaster-recovery plan
Experience maintaining production systems running Oracle databases
(installation, performance tuning, configuration)
Experience with SCSI RAID hardware solutions ? PC hardware
controllers
and disk arrays
Appropriate Responsibilities
Works under general direction from management; recommends and
implements policies on systems and services.
Support internal employees and external customers; Must be
willing to
do everything from building servers to handling helpdesk calls.
Must be willing to participate in pager rotation schedule and work
overtime as required.
Administers a large site alone or leads the administration of a
complex
site.
Initiates new responsibilities and helps to plan for the future
of the
site/network.
Mid-Level System Administrator
Required Skills
Strong interpersonal and communication skills; capable of writing
purchase justifications, training users in complex topics, and
interacting positively with upper management.
Ability to solve problems quickly and completely, Independent
problem-solving, self-direction
Proficient with most aspects of operating system administration;
for example, configuration of Internet services (DNS, FTP, Mail),
system installation and configuration (manual and automated using
jumpstart, kickstart), fundamentals of security, installing
third-party
software(GNU, Actuate, Oracle).
Has a solid understanding of a UNIX-based operating system
(Solaris,
RedHat Linux); understands paging and swapping, inter-process
communication, devices and what device drivers do, filesystem
concepts (inode, clustering, logical partitions).
Knowledge of fundamental networking/distributed computing
environment
concepts; SSL, NFS, Samba/NT domains, Apache/Tomcat web
environment;
can use nslookup or dig to check information in the DNS; task
automation, understands routing, client/server application concepts.
Ability to write scripts in some administrative language (Perl,
Python, ksh, bash, sh)
Ability to do minimal debugging and modification of an application
environment
Ability to learn and apply new technology and methodologies in a
distributed environment
