[ale] BSD(s) vs Linux

I think that, at least for the desktop, Linux has many advantages for the
"average" geek or otherwise less IT focused escapee from M$ tyranny. The
Linux flavors of *nix seem to have many more ready to run binary packages,
more OSS projects, better support for the latest hardware and popular
application arenas, plus more "in the distro" configuration and GUI options.

Though I haven't done any BSD flavored installations yet, my take on them as
a reasonably informed *nix user is that they require a lot more compiling and
tinkering with the nuts and bolts to get a desktop system together. Being a
major geek who has put in 18 years of media computing and several years of
programming work, plus 3 years of daily use and study with Linux along with
several Linux installations & updates, I am finally starting to feel
competent enough to attempt a BSD installation. :-) I can add that I also
have some interest and motivation to try BSD now since I love the FreeBSD
OSeX Macs that I get paid to work with 3 days a week!
