The latest 2.4 kernel contains a patch that may fix your problem. Seems
there is new IDE hardware out or a IDE chipset that isn't understood by
any kernel less than 2.4.21-rc4 (as of yesterday) and so the drive
reverts to no DMA access. I had problems with a Dell Inspiron 8500 and
found out about this new hardware that requires a patch. Emperor Linux
has a robust patch they have contributed to the kernel guys. The latest
2.4 kernel may have this patch but I've heard that any but the latest
was broken.
