I really like TDK, Plextor, LG, and Lite-on. I have a TDK drive in my system
and have had no problems at all.

i had the cdd2000 and then when that broke after 6 months, the cdd2600.
that broke after another 5 months.  collected the $200 rebate for the class
action, though (long expired) and got a couple of Tivos for family.  :)  i'm
extraordinarily hesitant to buy philips now, though!

I wouldn't have another Philips cd drive of any type.  I had a cdrw go
bad just after the warranty expired.  Researching it, I've found that
Philips had a class action law suit against them, for faulty cdrw
drives, unfortunately, mine was not included.
