Alternate approach:

Make sure the image is RGB: Image->Mode->RGB

Add an alpha channel: Image->Alpha Channel->Add Alpha Channel

Select as per Geoffrey's advice, but this will select any white in the
logo itself too.  While the selection is active, use the lasso tool with
the SHIFT modifier to subtract from the selection, and lasso any
selected white in the logo that you want to keep.

Delete the selection: Edit->Clear so that area is now transparent.

Save the image as XCF and then export it to PNG for actual use.

When done well, you can then change the background of your
web page and it just shows through the where the white background
had been.

Hope this helps.

BTW: I don't post a lot, but I've noticed someone in this group
who goes by CB.  I've gone by CB for about 30 years and only
once did I encounter someone else who did.  Mine is not for
initials, though, I just like it is all.  So, when I remember
for posting on this group I will try to sign my postings with
-C0B-, where the zero indicates that there are zero characters
between the C and the B.  This cleverness wouldn't work on
other forums, but might be appreciated here.

-C0B- (I dunno if I like that)

If the background
of the banner is all one color:

open the image of the background color.  Select the 'pick colors from the
image' icon, looks like an eyedropper.  Now click on the background color
and you'll note that your foreground color indicator will now be the color
of your website background.

Open your banner image. right click on the image to bring up the menu

select->by color

Then select the background of the banner with your mouse.  Now you can fill
that selection with the color of the website background, using the fill
tool, looks like a bucket.

it
has an easy answer I am sure. I made a scriptfu banner
and it has white space behind the logo. How do I go
about making it the same color as my website
background?

thanks
