Man I feel like an idiot. The reason kooka could not locate my scanner, 
was, uh, because it was still connected to the RH box and I was trying 
to use kooka on my SuSE box.  Once I connected the scanner to the SuSE 
box, kooka successfully scanned a document. Did you try selecting the:

settings->select scan device option?

You can try starting kooka from the command line and specify the scan 
device as in:

kooka -d /dev/usbscanner

See if any of that stuff might help?
