This is generic. I use it for SW & RH a lot. I don't trust vendor
upgrades (including rpm) because it is common for them to trash
configuration files.
1. Back up all important data to media that cannot be trashed by the
system. I.e., tape or another system's disk. Set tape Read/Only and
label.
/home
/root
/etc
/usr/local
/var/spool/mail
/var/spool/cron
2. Backup dirs that commonly have config info and custom stuff to a tar file:
/etc
/usr/local
/var/spool/cron
3. Do a complete install to empty partitions.
4. Merge config files as needed under /etc:
passwd, group, shadow, gshadow, hosts, hosts.allow, hosts.deny
aliases (or mail/aliases)
sendmail.cf (or mail/sendmail.cf)
sendmail.mc (or mail/sendmail.mc)
mail/
config files for servers (samba, dhcp, apache)
