Actually, Apple has their own X11 server now.  I think it is better than 
XDarwin (though it has been awhile since I ran it).  But the Apple 
version works well, is based on XFree86, and has all the libraries and 
headers necessary to compile X programs.  I compiled elvis on my iMac 
with no problems.

Checkout the Fink project.  They've ported all sorts of stuff.
