Finally got a solution.
The problem was I couldn't change the dma setting from 0 to 1
on my cd/dvd drive. The kernal wouldn't let me.
Finally got the answer from RedHat technical support:
I had to edit the /etc/modules.conf   file and add this line:

options ide-cd dma=1

Then, what the techie didn't know was that I had to reboot 
before trying again to change the dma setting to 1. Rebooted,
used <hdparm -d1 /dev/hdc> as root and, BINGO, the dma setting
was changed and now DVD movies play like they should, no 
herky-jerky and the audio is in sync.

Sean, who now can watch his stack of DVDs.
