My rational (if it could be called that) is that the opteron based servers are going to proliferate in the near future. So I want to be able to use them very well. That is my justification for my business making the purchase.
I also have a background in physics. There are many physics number-crunching problems that I still dabble with. Most are 32-bit OK . But some of the new models actually require a 64-bit space to address the problems. The algorithms are hideously complex to work with at 32-bit. The extra address space simplifies some of the parts and complicates others.
Speed is good. 1.4GHz at 64-bit is almost 2.8GHz at 32-bit. But the larger address space is the big thing for me.
