consider using ogg format if it is something that you will play on your computer.  also for speech recording I use VBR (variable bit rate) and encode to 32-48k (at 44100khz).  this is what i use for my audiobooks/lectures when i travel.  don't want to take my originals with me.  i usually don't "normalize", but know of some that like that.

roughly an hour of speech (for me) is around 550MB.  I encode this wave file to ogg at 32k/44100khz VBR and it is about 13MB.  this is how i catalog it (ogg format).  if i need to burn it to CD it is a simple decode to wave.
