[ale] Mandrake 9.1 Odd Printing

Mandrake 9.1, Canon BJC-4300 printer, lp0.

Test pages and even lpr of text files come out double-width, seemingly in a
draft mode (blacks are a dithered gray).

I have tried ALL of the drivers for this printer presented at install time to no
joy.  Also, this printer/computer combination had been printing swimmingly under
Mandrake 9.0.

Aside from switching back to 9.0 or to another distro entirely, any clue as to
what might be amiss here?
