[ale] Bellsouth DSL?

I've had situations like this many, many times with bellsouth. I have also had techs rush me off the phone by telling me "there's an outage, if your not back up in an hour, call us back". I'ts gotten so I don't believe a words that comes out of thier mouths.
I have however learned ways to get the tech the troubleshooting information he needs without the windows machine. It took a windows machine initially, and it's not the easiest thing in the world, but it works. Connect a winXP machine when your having trouble, once, and take notes on what the errors are. You can also disconnect the DSL modem to get the error you will have when sync is gone. Next time you have an outage, tell them you have winXP, refer to your sheet and no one is the wiser.
Oh, one more thing.. I had a BLS manager in DSL tell me once not to talk to Ft. Lauderdale. There are 4 or 5 call centers around, and that one is just miserable. I've tested it myslef since then, and found him to be right on the money. Try to get Oak Ridge, or the one in South Carolina. The only way to do this is to wait, ask the tech where they are and call back till you get one you want. I've still found it's more efficent than bothering to talk to the ones in Florida.

Like I said, I have BSDSL and I run only linux at home. Mandrake 9.1.
I recently had a problem with the line (actually, yesterday). I called,
they checked the line and nothing was showing as wrong. However, as soon
as I hung up with them, it magically started working right again. I bet
someone some where just had to kick the router....
That being said, I have been on the receiving end of one of their tech
calls, and I faked my way through the "What OS are you using?" bit.....
