It's hard to know without seeing the code :)

Does it still hang if you don't type anything into the text area?  Use
tcpdump or ethereal to capture both a working submit and a hanging
submit and compare.  It's possible that IE is correcting a mistake in
the form.  I assume both submits go to the same server?
