[ale] Package Management System

Well, I've read all the posts to this thread to date and as a long time
SuSE user I have this comment:
You certainly beat out any Microsoft package management hands down and
with no questions in the Linux world.
I like the latest improvements in certain packages such as Mozilla and
OpenOffice.org. It is not trivial to configure those packages in a rpm
format to fit into SuSE, Redhat, or Mandrake. Slackware would be
possible since it is tgz source based. Debian cutting edge would work
since the packages can be apt-get'ted. Gentoo seems like the best since
it is updated frequently and compiles to your machine. I am not for
sure of the answer but I like the idea of the ports, just haven't used
it. Seems we all want to have rpm database type management and/or ports
seamless integration, but I also want to have compilation for the local
architecture too. But, since I haven't used Debian or Gentoo it is
still in the "grass being greener" category.
The most advanced packagemanagement in the world is being developed on
Open Source operating systems. IRIX based "inst" predates rpm and is
exactly like it. However, it has the same problems that rpm's currently
have in that you must have all the dependencies ready to install for
your package and that is a manual process that takes time. I think
apt-get under Gentoo is the next logical step for upgrading current
packages, but we will see. I've yet to try it.
