[ale] another darn sed/awk question - disregard

Erm, your sample data had only 7 characters before the digits on the
first two lines, but presuming you meant what you asked there's
always:

perl -lpe 's/^(.{8})/$1 /' foo


Or even:

ruby -pe '$_=$_[0..7]+" "+$_[8..-1]' foo


Or:

ruby -pe '$_.sub!(/^(.{8})/,"\\1 ")' foo


But then that's not using sed or awk.  Then again who'd want to? :)
