I have seen a palm OS system which holds the password etc data in an 
encrypted form. The security of such an approach I can not vouch for.

For my own use, I use gpasman (yes, gnome) on one machine, and access it 
through ssh. I don't know  how well it would scale to your level of use, 
nor can I vouch for the intrinsic security either.
