Actually, it started quite a bit earlier than that..  Just a bit before the MMX chips came out. In fact, I coulod swear I've ever seen late model 486's that could boot CD. It's a bios thing so, even if a machine you have won't, try getting updated firmware (sometimes that's hard to find..) and see if it's part of an update.

I have some cd bootable "junkers" that might be useful for you, not sure what I have but I know I have 3 or 4 around. If your interested, hit me off list (f.g.robertson at alexiongroup.com)

I need some new junkers - PCs that will boot to the CD drive.  I'm trying to
work with Gentoo and if the machine can't do that, it's a total PITA.

Did that ability start with the PII range, in general?
