[ale] Linux + barcode scanners

We are looking at implementing a barcode system to keep track of our PC inventory at the Law School. My preference would be to use Linux+MySQL for the database, does anyone have any experience in this area? I would like to use a Palm with the barcode scanner attachment or something similar.
