I've noted the various other responses, but I think you'll have a 
problem with a straight install of any major distro except Slackware. 
The issue will be the amount of memory.  I'm pretty sure Mandrake, SuSE 
and Red Hat require 64 mb for an install of their latest releases.

One solution to this issue is to do the install with more memory, 
whether you borrow it from another machine or have a couple of 'install' 
memory sticks on hand.

With that many systems, you should certainly look into some variation of 
automated install.  Further, I'd contact each distro and ask them what 
they'll do to assist in order for them to get there distro installed on 
500+ machines.
