hi tom,
the answer is "yep", providing you know how you wish to accomplish this
task. my mp3 server cost me $1200 new in 1994, and I've added a hard drive
to it since then. since it's is so old, parts like RAM, video card, sound
card, etc, are dirt cheap or free. my mp3-playing system:
-mp3 server: old PC running mandrake 8.2, big hard drive, running nfs
-mp3 players: scattered around the house, 3Com Audreys (audreyhacking.com).
they were not expensive (under $80), other folks have figured out how to
hotrod them (QNX), skip-free mp3 playing, and you can make playlists for
favs. audrey nfs-mounts my mp3 share on the linux box...works like a charm.
Audrey will also stream mp3s from the web.
so, in each room of my house is an el-cheapo sound system (usually old
hardware since I haven't upgraded my stereo components in years!), audrey
and some semblance of network connection (audrey works with a Linksys WET11
wireless ethernet bridge!). Good Luck!
