[ale] DSL Modem problem

Nick,
Run roaring penguin on the working modem in the debug mode.  It will 
connect so you will need to stop the session very soon so the log won't 
grow too big.  Then do the same with the new modem.  Compare the LCP 
part of the session to see the difference.  Post to us what you can of 
the differences.  It does seem that we need to know what is stopping the 
LCP Config-Requests from working.  Interesting that you use CHAP instead 
of PAP for authentication on the successful sessions.  Looking for the 
debug file post from you.  The end of the file is the most useful where 
the PADx part is listed.  This will help with the DSL part of the 
session.  Just before that, if I remember correctly, is the PPP session 
which will help with the LCP and IPCP part of establishing the actual 
PPP session.  You have to get the PADx stuff understood before the PPP 
stuff can take place.  Since you've actually show LCP Config-Requests 
happening, I could possibly assume that you have a PPP problem.
