My choice was to sign up with Speakeasy. Seemed the most fair and
legitimate Terms of Use Agreement among the several ISP's I investigated
(including Speedfactory and Snappy), and they openly state support for
Linux. Most important to my needs were that they provide Static IP's and
allow HTTP, FTP, SSH, etc servers (they do, however, discourage chat
servers).

The DSL modem equipment is _technically_ free, but only after submitting
a Rebate for their "self install kit", so Speakeasy will have a loan of
my $200 for 8 to 10 weeks.

Speakeasy also has a good spectrum of plans, though they do trade
bandwidth as well as features for price. The plan I chose matches or
exceeds most of what I was getting with DirecTV , including 5 email
addresses, 50 meg web space (DTV was 30) and Two Static IP addresses (as
opposed to One). To keep the price down on the plan I did trade off some
bandwidth and will be at 680 down / 128 up; however, due to my distance
from the C.O. and Bell South's ancient wires in this area my effective
bandwidth has rarely exceeded 500 kbps anyway. At $60/mo the Speakeasy
plan increases my monthly cost by $10, but most all the other Static IP
options I looked at were at least $65/mo.

Speakeasy also has a $50 referral bonus, which I will be happy to split
50-50 with anyone else here who finds this a good alternative to DirecTV
and wants to share a discount. Just drop me a private email.

peace
(after justice)
