That's a pretty unusual problem.  As for getting X to run (the desktop) 
that's not that big an issue.  Try typing 'startx' once you log in.

I'm forwarding your inquiry to the actual list. You've posted to the 
admin list, which is not seen by all members.  Your best bet would be to 
subscribe to the ale list in order to insure you see any responses.
