[ale] prboom killing slack

Hey,

I was trying to get prboom running on slack 8.1.  Boom has gotten really
complex now; it wants sdl, sdl_mixer, sdl_net, smpeg, probably other
stuff too.  Anyway, I got the packages off of linuxpackages.net, but
whenever I try and run prboom, the screen goes blank and the entire
machine appears to panic/lock up.  The display is blank.  No virtual
screens exist.  Trying to ping the machine from a remote host shows the
host to be down.  (It was up before the prboom attempt.)

Any ideas on how to fix this?  (No entrys in any of the logs I can find
(XFree, messages, syslog, etc)
