[ale] newbie question: starting a program on login...

If you're running redhat, as root cd to /etc/rc.d/init.d and do "grep
gpilotd *" and see if its in any of the init files, then run "setup" and
select services and see if its in the list ( or do that first, either
or).  If you're running slack, as i am, just put it in
/etc/rc.d/rc.local:

if [ -x /path/to/gpilotd ]; then
	/path/to/gpilotd
fi

-- or -- 

put that into your .bash_login / .bashrc.
